Our Story

How it all started...

It all started on July 10 1949 as Newport Church of God!!

The Newport Church of God began with a Holiness tent revival, conducted by N.A. Cagle, May 20, 1949. Subsequently, Mr. Cagle organized the Ladies Willing Worker Band, and a :church shop" was opened near the post office in a building provided by Henry Williams. The proceeds went toward purchasing a lot for building a church.
The church was formally organized July 10, 1949, during another tent revival. The revival was led by Rev. and Mrs. Wade Crotts, and following the services the congregation went to the Fresh Pone and held a Baptismal service.
A lot was purchased, September 15, 1949, on the south side of Newport School on Mann Street. Shortly thereafter, a foundation was poured, and everyone pitched in doing what they could in building the church. Suppers were held, and all sort of items were sold to raise money for the building fund. The charter members looked back with pride on what they had accomplished.
In September 1950, the Rev. D.C. Davis was assigned to the church as pastor. Mr. Davis helped finish laying the concrete blocks, erecting the rafters and installing the windows. Mrs. Davis was very active in fund raising, preparing baked goods for sale, and selling greeting cards and calendars.
The Davises transferred to a church in Benson after three years in Newport. When they left, the church was out of debt, and they were sorely missed.
In January 1953, the church was assigned Rev. J.F. Daniels as pastor. During his tenure, numerous projects were initiated to raise money, and various improvements were made to the church. Brother Earl Potter is noted in the records for his generosity and dedication to the church. Following Rev. Daniels was an interim minister, Rev. R.T. McBrayer.
Mr. Cagle returned as pastor during November of 1953; he also directed the choir. Church offers were Arval A. Dingess, clerk and Sunday school superintendent; C.C. Speight, assistant Sunday school superintendent; Mrs. Arval A. Dingess, secretary and treasurer.
The congregation was very active; Sunday school attendance tripled. The Young People's Endeaver was organized, and a bus would go in and around Newport and pick up children for the different activities. The Willing Workers Band met once a week and raised money to complete the building. Mr. Cagle commented, "The Lord had surely been with us and blessed our efforts."

In later years a new brick church was built across the street.
